Understanding Travertine Cuts

The visual character of travertine depends entirely on the direction the raw block is sawed relative to the natural sedimentary bedding planes:

Vein Cut (Horizontal Banding)

Blocks are sawed parallel to the bedding veins. This exposes the horizontal sedimentary layers, creating sleek, modern parallel band lines.

Cross Cut (Flowing Clouds)

Blocks are sawed perpendicular to the bedding veins. This creates a circular, cloud-like floral pattern showing concentric natural swirls.

Filled vs Unfilled Finishes

Naturally occurring travertine contains small vacuum pockets. We process slabs to fit specific application requirements:

  • Honed Unfilled: Holes are left open. Exudes a raw, organic texture. Perfect for exterior wall claddings.
  • Honed/Polished Filled: Cavities are filled with a specialized matching cement or transparent polyester epoxy, then sanded flush. Perfect for interior bathroom floorings to prevent dirt accumulation.
